Women’s Cricket

Women and Girls (W&G) participation in cricket is seriously on the rise across the country with increased support from the England Cricket Board. Whittington Cricket launched their section only last season (2019).

WHITTINGTON CRICKET CLUB - WOMEN'SSoftball

We have a very friendly squad of around 20 girls and ladies so far (aged between 12 and 60 (ish!). Despite most people being new to the game, we were very successful on and off the field ‘winning’ two of the tournaments (no official scores are maintained but we know we won all our games on those days ? ). You don’t need to have played cricket/softball previously to join us as we are all learning as we go!

The mighty Whittington W&G (along with Elford) squad train on Tuesday evenings (7pm) during the summer season. Training will start in the first week of May. Wear gym clothes and trainers.

Lyn Wadlow-Smith is the key co-ordinator for female cricket and Claire Higgins acts as our club captain. (Claire has one of the best backfoot cover drives in the business by the way)

We intend to enter all of the softball tournaments -the dates are below (venues are currently being determined). Come join us and have some fun!

ABOUT SOFTBALLIt is a really friendly atmosphere and most of us are novices just wanting to enjoy the game and each others’ company. This is a great opportunity to play a sport with your daughter – we have several mum/daughter combos in our team!

  • The ball doesn’t hurt when you catch it!
  • It’s a bit like rounders without the multiple bases but with a bigger bat so it’s easier to connect with the ball.
  • You can bowl underarm so you do not need to be an overarm master bowler to be able to join us – more than half the team bowl underarm.
  • There are only a few rules which you can pick up as you go along.
  • The tournaments last about 3-4 hours on a Sunday afternoon.  Each game is less than an hour.
  • Everyone gets to bowl and bat.
