It is really important to make sure that everyone drinks enough water. Unfortunately, there is no magic amount that adults or children need to drink every day.
Usually, children like to drink something with meals and should definitely drink when they are thirsty, but when it is warm or children are exercising, just like adults, it is important to make sure that they drink more. Please ensure that children drink some extra water when they are out in warm weather, especially whilst they are playing sports or exercising.
When you drink is also important. It is important to drink water before, during and after playing sports. Please make sure children remember their water bottle, they can’t play their best when they are thinking how thirsty they are!
Dehydration can also keep them from being as fast and as sharp as they would like to be, and a bad case of dehydration can make people sick so it is really important to keep a water bottle handy.
It might be helpful to teach children the signs of being dehydrated by encouraging them to look at the colour of their urine. If the urine is a light yellow it might be the body getting rid of excess water whereas dark yellow urine can be a sign of dehydration, indicating it is probably time to drink up.
You can help by encouraging children to drink up when they are thirsty and get them into a habit of drinking extra when they exercise or when it is warm.
Whittington Cricket Club will always ensure that children have access to water during training and matches and they will always be able to refill their water bottle.
